“Faceless New Zealanders”
Sir, —In this age of the mad rush and the struggle of living amid white hot competition, New Zealand is unique and relatively unspoiled. Our heritage, the Welfare State, is a significant advance in the social condition of man. Dr. Pownall believes us to be “soft and flabby” and envies the Australians with their “spirit of drive and enthusiasm” and “purposeful air.” The average Australian does work harder than his New Zealand counterpart: with so much American investment, unemployment, and a growing rat race, he has to. New Zealand is now as Australia once was and many Australians must regret their country’s adoption of a brash and ini sensitive so called “forward”
drive. New Zealanders, with their even tempo of life, are neither soft nor backward. They are sensible, and know that they can gain little of real worth but lose much by following either Dr. Pownall or Big Brother across the Tasman.—Yours, etc., MAN IN THE STREET. March 4, 1966.
