Gaoled For Taking Bus

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 4. A man who converted a bus from the Air Force base at Shelly Bay, drove it 133 miles and then returned it to the base was sentenced to 12 months’ gaol, in the Magistrate’s Court. Peter James Winiata, aged 29, a workman, was appearing for sentence on three charges of theft and one of conversion. The charges were that on February 12, Winiata stole £3 18s 2d in cash at Taihape and on the same day stole a suitcase containing women’s clothing to the value of £56 Us, also at Taihape. He was also charged that on February 13 he stole a key holder and six keys to the value of £1 Is from the Army Department at Waiouru. He had pleaded guilty to all charges. The conversion charge arose after the accused had gone to the Shelly Bay Air Force base on February 14 posing as an Army staff sergeant. Winiata was convicted and sentenced to 12 months’ gaol on the conversion and major theft charge and one month’s gaol on the other two theft charges. The sentences will be served concurrently. '
