Canterbury’s First For Five Years

Even the winning of Canterbury’s first ] senior track title for five years, by J. H. Cleary (Papanui) could not overshadow the mag- I nificent riding of the New Plymouth junior, | J. Dean (West Coast-North Island) in the * national cycling championships at English ’ Park yesterday morning.

In terrible conditions, Dean rode a fantastic time of Imin 13.9 sec in the kilometer time trial, a performance that enabled him to win by Ijsec. He had to contend with heavy rain and a gusty southwesterly, and in reasonable conditions certainly would have broken V. L. Newlove's junior record of lmin 13.6 sec Ironically, Newlove punctured in the senior time trial and, unwilling to ride again, forfeited a chance to win his fourth successive national title in this event, junior or senior.

But even at the tim| he punctured, he was slower than Canterbury's chaflipion, Cleary, whose time of lmin 15.4 sec was the same as that he returned in the provincial titles.

It was a fine effort by Clean', last year’s winner of the junior championship, and a material reward for some fine sprinting this year. Canterbury’s other placing went to C. B. Fitzgerald, who was granted a re-run after he also punctured. In his first attempt, he was on schedule for a placing and retained

this form in his later ride. Canterbury’s last senior champion in national events was G. Hill. Five years ago, at Cooks Gardens, Wanganui, he also won the time trial. Bowls At Noon The Christchurch champion of champions fours bowls tournament, to be played on the Elmwood and Opawa greens, will not begin until noon today. Yesterday’s heavy rain forced the postponement of the starting time until later in the day.
