Tornado’s Trail Of Damage

AUCKLAND, March 4. A tornado which struck the Balmoral-Grange road area of Mount Eden about 2 p.m. today left behind uprooted trees, smashed windows, wrecked fences and damaged roofs.
Mrs I. Sampson, who lives in a block of flats in Grange road, was doing her washing when the tornado struck. “I heard, glass smashing in the living room,” she said. “I looked in and everything in the room seemed to be moving.”

Lamps and ornaments were thrown to the floor. Tiles were lifted from the roofs of the same block of flats by the wind. Another Grange resident, Mrs M. Wright, had her hedge and trellis smashed. She said she heard a roaring sound,
saw the tornado and rushed inside. Mrs Wright said she could see sheets of iron roofing whirling around in the air. A row of shrubs and trees lining a driveway in Grange read was flattened, and some were uprooted. Hamilton Storm An electrical and hail storm cut electricity supplies to part of Hamilton about 3 p.m. Fuses in homes were blown out and electrical appliances put out of action. A television set in the home of Mr F. Grant, Vercoe road, was burnt out and at the home of a neighbour, Mr R. J. W. Muir, the stove was struck by lightning.
