Brown Breaks 8-Year-Old Schools ’ Swimming Record

W. Brown (Xavier College) dominated the Christchurch secondary schools’ swimming sports when he twice broke the 110 yd senior breaststroke record at the Centennial Pool yesterday.

In both his heat and the final, Brown broke the time of 82.7 sec which has stood to the credit of G. Brittenden since 1958 and ended with a new record of 80.3 seJ. Edmonds (Christchurch Boys’ High School), who captured both New Zealand junior breaststroke titles at Napier last week, was disqualified in his heat of the 110 yards intermediate breaststroke. He was considered by the officials to have dropped his left shoulder and brought up his right foot. The Christchurch Boys’ High School intermediate relay team cut o.3sec from the 1962 record in its heat with a new time of 2min o.4sec. However, it was I.3sec slower in the final.

In a fine race, C. Kinder defeated the Canterbury junior 220 yards backstroke record-holder, A. Kindred, in the intermediate event. The current Canterbury senior champion, D. Bowman, was third. M. Hindle defeated L. Furness in the 110 yards intermediate freestyle final, but was nearly a second outside G. Stringer’s 1962 record of 62.45ec.
