“Faceless New Zealanders”
Sir, —We should feel indebted to Dr. L. L. Pownall for reminding us that we as a nation cannot stand still—we either go forward or back. However, as is often the case with those of high academic qualifications, Dr. Pownall is inclined to generalise overmuch. His remarks on “the cult of the welfare state” are too sweeping. Would he agree that the “old age pension” should be a proportionate amount equivalent to the first payment to pioneers too old to earn a living? Not all New Zealanders do rush to the pubs at 5 p.m., attend the races, enjoy the same sports,, or even buy art union tickets: only a minority indulge to excess. Would he prefer unemployment rather than shortage of labour? The latter can be more easily corrected. Agreed that all should “get what -they earn and not merely earn what they get,” to quote Sir Walter Nash.— Yours, etc., BE LOGICAL, DOCTOR. March 2, 1966.
