Peace Council Protests

Massive escalation of the Vietnam war was in prospect by the resumed United States bombing of North Vietnam, according to identical telegrams sent by the secretary of the New Zealand Peace Council (Mrs F. Gould) to the Prime Minister (Mr Hoiyoake) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk). The telegram said that “tiie resumption of the bombing of North Vietnam fully exposed the insincerity of negotiation proposals, and along with increased United States interventinn in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, threatened a massive escalation of the war.” The two leaders were urged to protest and demand that the United States adhere to the Geneva Agreement and that they should work for the withdrawal of New Zealand support for this aggressive policy.
