The Climber

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) WASHINGTON. \JR GUSTAV HERGERT, a 1 75-year-old bachelor, has reached the halfway mark in his bid to climb the 898 steps of the Washington Monument, 2000 times. Mr Hergert, who was born in Germany but has spent most of his life in the United States, began climbing the 555 ft monument towering over Washington six years ago.

He says that he does the climb whenever he has nothing else important to do and to keep him fit for hiking and his first love, swimming. He swims a mile a day.

“I shall do the monument 2000 times if my strength holds out,” he declared. He usually takes 18 minutes to go up to 898 steps, and 12 to 15 minutes to come down. Most people, go up in one minute—in the lift.
