COLTS CRICKET TOUR
r rHE interchange of visits 1 between colts cricket teams of northern New South Wales and New Zealand teams was carried a stage further, most successfully, ■with the recent tour by the Canterbury Colts team. It was an extremely pleasant and valuable tour for the young Canterbury players—and not quite as arduous as a recent report might have suggested. The team came back with four outright wins, not two as reported earlier. The travelling totalled 300 miles in the first six days, but the distance between matches, travelled at night, was about 80 to 100 miles. On only two of the 13 playing days was the temperature below 90 degrees. The pitches at Armidale and Invcrell were fiery, not sticky, as stated. At Inverell, the pitch was not artificially watered as suggested:
there was an inch and a half of rain the night before the match, and it got under the covers. At Armidale, the pitch, which had been used for another match, had to be watered early on the morning of Canterbury’s game, to make sure it lasted the match, and it was rather fiery for about an hour. At Tamworth, where a three-day game against North New South Wales Emus was played, there was a lush green outfield. The pitch played well throughout the match. The Canterbury manager (Mr G. W. Frampton) said that the organisation of the matches by the various cricket councils concerned was of a very high standard. The hospitality was magnificent. Apart from the valuable cricketing experience won, the players were also fortunate in being able to stay in many magnificent homes.
