800 METRES
It is not every young girl athlete’s ambition to be a distance runner but a 15-year-old American, Marie Mulder, has already represented her country against Russia in the 800 metres and is now training for the women’s 1500 metres; an event which is expected to be included in the 1968 Olympic Games. At the seventh annual United States - Soviet Union athletic meet, Miss Mulder came second in the 800 metres in a time of 2min 7.3 sec and she finished only a second behind the Russian champion, Tatyana Dmitrieva. Already Miss Mulder has adopted a rigorous training schedule as part of her plan to win an Olympic title. She runs between three and seven miles every day and can do 70 push-ups.
