Retirement Announced When Mr L. R. Hampton retires on Friday as assistant commissioner of Crown lands in Christchurch, he will have completed 41} years’ service with the Lands and Survey Department. He has been its representative on many organisations, latterly on the South Canterbury Catchment Board and the Peel Forest Park Board. Joining the department at Napier as a cadet in 1924, Mr Hampton later worked in Christchurch and Wellington before returning to Christchurch iln 1952. He was in Hawke’s Bay during the earthquake and for his part in the relief organisation after the disaster received a special letter of commendation from the Mayor of Hastings. He played a major role in reconstructing the department’s accounting records, which were destroyed completely iln the fire after the earthquake. Mr Hampton was accountant at Napier on the outbreak of war and after serving two years in the Army was with the Department of Industries and Commerce in Wellington for a year before returning to the Lands and Survey Department in Wellington, assisting with the settlement of former servicemen. He was appointed to Christchurch as accountant in 1946. Two years later he was appointed assistant chief accountant at heed office, and later accountant, Wellington, then came to Christchurch as chief clerk in 1952. He received his present appointment in 1957.
