Labour’s Prospects In U.K. And N.Z.

Sir. —“Disillusioned Nationalist’s” letter is as misleading as his nom-de-plume. Labour promised to improve the Westport harbour on the eve of many elections but always broke the promise afterwards. Westport Labourites were dumbfounded when Mr Holyoake announced that his Government would do the job. They then tried to undermine confidence within the district by saying that it would never eventuate. But in the words of a prominent miners’ union official. “Mr Holyoake has been as good as his word.” As for pandering to oil companies, it was the last Labour Government that approved the oil refinery at Whangarei and during its term of office miners were leaving the district—some selling their homes for £5O and others just abandoning theirs! The miners here are better off today than ever England’s Labour Government is trying one method of winning votes accepting dumped butter to reduce New Zealand’s price.—Yours, etc., NATIONAL THIS TIME. February 5, 1966.
