Alcoholism
Sir, —I would strongly agree with several of your recent correspondents that, as chronic alcoholism can be described as a “self-inflicted” disease, the sufferers of this illness should be treated as guilty people, and not as having an illness. I would urge that this principle be carried to its logical conclusion, and that persons who smoke and later develop lung cancer should be refused hospital treatment. Similarly, persons injured in road accidents, purely as a result of their own negligence or carelessness should be left on the roadside as an example Jof their own human frailty. In this effete age we are far too prone to be compassionate towards people such as these Whatever we do, let us not use our increased knowledge of alcoholism to further so-called progress in treatment and understanding.— Yours, etc., BEDLAM BYSTANDER. February 6 1966.
