Rochford Place Gains Award
Rochford place, Bryndwr, was selected yesterday as the best street in Christchurch for 1966. It runs off Ham road near the Wairakei road corner. Judges for the competition were Mr H. G. Gilpin, director of parks and reserves; Mr O. C. Mitchell, chairman of the Waimairi County Council; Mr E. Taylor, for the City Council streets, and Messrs R. C. Harrow and W A. Clare, of the Waimairi County Council. The judges said that the consistent efforts and maintenance of all streets in the competition by the residents
were deserving of praise. They provide pleasure not only for themselves but for al) Christchurch citizens and visitors to the city. Some streets, they said, had to be inspected more than once. Points were deducted for untidy sides of end houses not in the street being judged. Consideration would have to be given to this factor in future. The organiser (Mr W. E. Turland) suggested that the council should consider underground reticulation for streets which have made an excellent civic effort over a number of years. Unsightly power poles detracted from the overall effect. Underground reticulation would be
. a timely reward and appreciat tion. r The judges said the resi--1 dents of Kenwyn avenue and Royds street deserved special 1 thanks.
