NUMEROUS WINS
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE.
Stewards ordered a swab from the galloper, Kaiwaki, on Saturday after he was badly beaten by the New Zealand horse Numerous, in the River Handicap (10 furlongs) at Flemington. Favourite at 3-1, Kaiwaki turned in a shocking performance to finish near the end of the field, 15 lengths behind the winner. Numerous, 14-1, had to withstand a protest from the heavily backed Better 5-1, before being awarded the race. Numerous finished too strongly for Better, which tried to lead al] the way. He scored by a neck, with Mr Novak, 6-1, four lengths away third.
B. MacDonald, rider of Better, protested on the grounds of interference over the last half furlong, but the protest was dismissed.
