SHIPMATE FIT

Newcomer In 2nd Leg Shipmate went about his work with characteristic keenness when running five furlongs in Imin 4 2-ssec on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by his race rider, A. J. Stokes, Shipmate ran the last half-mile in 49 3-ssec and the final three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. Shipmate is a newcomer at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting, which ends today. He is in the Amuri Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Scent (G. F. Hughes) hurried in from the three furlongs on the plough, which gave fast footing, in 36 2-ssec. One of the failures in the Craven Plate, she is being tried in less distinguished company and over a bit more ground in the high-weight today. Hawkins (J. Kerkvliet) and Early Dawn (G. W. Mein) kept up a solid pace throughout seven furlongs. They recorded Imin 31 l-ssec after cutting out the opening halfmile in 51 2-ssec. On the No. 8 grass Chatsgay (G. F. Hughes) sprinted three furlongs in 40sec. He did not make an impression in the Midsummer Handicap on Saturday, but it will not be surprising if the race did this robust gelding some good.
