Frosty Heather Easy Marlborough Winner
(From Our Own Reporter) BLENHEIM. Frosty Heather improved a very sound record for her Wellington owner, Mr R. A. McKenzie, when he beat 20 rivals hands down in the S. S. Fleming Memorial Handicap at Blenheim yesterday.
Considering his form—he had won as a sprinter at Nelson and had been successful aslo on the first day of the Marlborough meeting—Frosty Heather was at very good odds. He was the third favourite and paid £8 Ils and £2 16s 6d for a win and place.
The Fleming Memorial was the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg, the W. T. Lowe Memorial was won by Star Globe. The dividend was £42 14s for £l. Frosty Heather, a three-year-old gelded son of Thurber Frost and Heather Mary is trained at Yaldhurst by J. B. Noble and was driven by the young stable reinsman, R. L. Stewart.
Frosty Heather was midfield and three wide for a time but Stewart manager to work him into a handy position near the half-mile and he was third equal on the home turn. Just inside the last furlong he challenged Bar None and Hal Special for the lead and it was all over then. Frosty Heather beat Bar None by five lengths and Hal Special was half a length away third. Led Chase Bar None had been coleader with Le Whip through the straight the first time then led the chase after Gay Return from the six furlongs around to the straight. Hal Special was also in touch with the pace all the way. Calm Autumn, fourth on the inner till the home turn, fought on well for fourth, a length and a half back. She out-finished Doctor Jim, another close up all the way. Money Wise ran on from midfield for sixth. The favourite, On Probation, was next. The fourth favourite, Viewin, made a big run to share the third line at the six furlongs but came to the end of that run half a mile out.
Star Globe, rehandicapped to 36 yards for his earlier win, began smartly and reached the lead with six furlongs to go in the Lowe Memorial.
Unreal, one of the early tailenders, rushed up to join Star Globe near the five furlongs and they ran to the straight together. Once in the run home, Star Globe quickly went clear and won as he liked by a length. Unreal faded badly and dropped out. Deadheat
In a tight finish for the minor places the camera could not separate Charlie Mack and Eohe Navarre for second, with the win favourite, Chaman, half a head away fourth. Charlie Mack had received the run of the race and Eone Navarre shared the third line with Chaman to the straight. Certify improved a place or two in the run home for a close fifth and Abbey Frost, which had every chance, led in the others.
There was a mix-up at the straight entrance involving Fallax, Chief Smile and Kilkivan. Fallax’s driver, G. D. Shand, was tipped out of the sulky. Fair Play, an unlucky second earlier in the day, gave D. G. Jones his third training and driving success at the meeting when he led all the way in the Kaikoura Handicap.
In the run home Fair Play drew out to beat Awayugo, which had led the chase all the way, by five lengths. Six lengths further back Space Chief came again after breaking near the straight entrance. Poor Runs
Sure Deb and Wayren, the favourite bracket to win. never raised the hopes of their backers. Sure Deb ruined her chance when she broke at the end of two furlongs and Wayren just plugged on In midfield all the way.
Inquisitive Lad and Fallout won their respective divisions of the Picton Handicap. Inquisitive Lad ran at the back of the main bunch till the home turn in the first division and finished well wide out to catch Snead, which reached the lead inside the furlong but was not driven out in the last stride. There was a head between winner and runner-up and a neck to Palpitation, which had tried to lead for the last six furlongs. Fallout, one of the slower beginners, reached a challenging position on the home turn in the second division and ran on best to win by a length and a half from High Caste, which tried to lead all the way. Ulight, which started from 36 yards, came home well for third half a length back. Lofty capped off some useful placed form by narrowly winning the Marfell Handicap, in which he was a clear leader for the last seven furlongs. He had to work hard in the last 100 yards to cope with a solid challenge from Stormy Scott, which received the run of the race. Southern Tryax, fifth into the straight, ran on for third but was a length and a half back. Results: RICHMOND BROOK HANDICAP, £295: 2:19 class; 2tn. 2/1 STAR GLOBE 48 D. G. Jones 1 1/2 STUDENT It C. Press Association) WELLINGTON T.A.B. betting on the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday totalled £40,907 15s, made up of win and place £19,270 and doubles £21,637 15s, compared with £44,717 last year. The off-course substitute was Abbey Frost. Change To Points (N.Z. Press Assn.-—Copyright) SYDNEY. New South Wales Trotting Club officials have reversed their decision which shared the points for fastest time between Dale’s Gift and Tactile, which were first and second in the first pacing heat of the Inter-Dominion Championships on Saturday night. They decided that Dale’s Gift, by virtue of his win, had actually registered fastest time and allotted him the three points. This puts Dale’s Gift clearly at the top of the championship table with seven points, and Tactile drops from three and a half to two.
