U.K. DEFENCE POLICY

East Of Suez Strategy

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright > KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 6. Britain was determined to maintain her military presence east of Suez “right up to 1970 and even beyond it,” the United Kingdom Defence Secretary, Mr Denis Healey, said in Kuala Lumpur. He said that this would apply, even if Indonesian confrontation ended, but in this case the forces would be reduced.

Mr Healey said that Britain had a larger force in the region than in the whole of Europe. He said Britain was tryins to get other countries to share the responsibility and he would like to see a United Nations peace-keeping force in the region. But in the absence of such a force, Britain would shoulder the responsibility, Mr Healey, who has had talks with Malaysian and Singapore leaders, flew back to London yesterday.
