DULL, CALM, OVERCAST
Weather Slows Growth
A high proportion of dull, calm overcast weather was reflected in below average sunshine hours and the highest mean January humidity for 15 years, says a summary of meteorological observations made at Lincoln College.
The highest maximum temperature occurred on January 1 when 91.7 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded. The mean temperature for the month was 62.41 degrees Fahrenheit. There were 190.7 hours of sunshine compared with a station mean of 213.2 hours. Of interest to the farmers has been the slow ripening of crops. High humidity, low winds and cloud cover produced slow drying of mown crops and slow ripening of crops to be headed. Only in the last few days of January did headers get into full swing.
Aftermaths of hay or seed crops have grown well—there Is no shortage of feed for stock. Large quantities of ryegrass straw were baled and stored for future use. Cultivation was kept up to date although some cases of twitch killing have not been the best.
Apart from some flystrike of young sheep, stock health remained satisfactory. Summer production from home gardens was better than in recent years.
