Fast Shearing
(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA Feb. 7. A Whakatane shearer, Maurice Anderson, is believed to have set a New Zealand record by shearing 524 sheep in 12 hours. Mr Anderson achieved this tally on Friday at Bramdene station, near Onepu, Bay of Plenty, under the eyes of an official scrutineer, Mr S. Newton, J-P-, of Rotorua. The sheep were mature, full-wool Perendales that had been enriched about three weeks previously and had received a normal machine dag. Mr Anderson had two men. Messrs J. Conn and D. West, to pace him through the record at-
tempt, which started at 5 a.m. He sheared 63 sheep Th the first hour, 59 in the second and 61 in the third. He then had alternate 45-minute and hourly runs, putting through tallies of 45. 57, 43, 56, 44, 57, and 39. Although Mr Anderson’s tally is almost certainly a New Zealand record it cannot be ratified as such. The Wool Board does not recognise competitive shearing outside the annual Golden Shears event. Mr Anderson, aged 28, has been shearing for about eight years. He is a former pupil of Mr Ivan Bowen.
