Farm Workers’ Wages

Sir, —Having spent 16 years working on farms in New Zealand and overseas, I feel qualified to offer my views on this subject. Good men can command a high wage, and many farmers offer a generous harvest and lambing bonus in return for extra effort. There are others, however, who make full use of the shamefully one-sided awards which, if studied carefully, state that the employer may do exactly as he wishes if he pays a few shillings more than minimum rates. For example, a dairy farmer will pay a youth £lO plus board and work him 80 hours a week. A sheep farmer may work his men 14 Saturday afternoons and whenever he considers the work essential. Which other industry could get away with that? Until a reasonable award is drawn up. with representation of both sides, the drift to town will surely continue. —Yours, etc., NOT MANY OF US LEFT.
