Stopped Train

(NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 6. A youth who stopped a train by changing the colour of the railway signals appeared in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr F. McCarthy, S.M. Brian Alexander Close, aged 20, a welder, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully interfering with a railway signal. Detective Sergeant E, R. Hutchinson said that on November 5 a goods train was travelling from Helensville to Newmarket. Approaching New Lynn station about 11.30 p.m., the engine driver noticed the “up” home signal changing colour several times. He stopped the train and some time later it was piloted into New Lynn station by the agent who was on duty. The police were then called and after a search Close was found near the railway yards. The Magistrate remanded Close in custody until February 11 for a probation report and sentence.
