THIRD CHIEF WINS MARLBOROUGH CUP

(From Our Own Reporter) BLENHEIM. Third Chief completed a notable double on the Nelson* Marlborough circuit for his Methven owner, Mr T. H. Lemon, when he outclassed 18 rivals in the Marlborough Cup at Blenheim on Saturday.

The previous week Mr Lemon’s Meadow Chief four-year-old had been successful in the Nelson Cup. Third

Chief, which has now won five races, tvas also improving a winning record at Blen-

heim. He gained his first victory at the corresponding meeting 12 months ago. The Marlborough Cup was a race of changing fortunes. The pace was muddling and many of those which ran in the body of the field struck more than their fair share of bother. One of these was the each-way favourite, On Probation.

Most of the handicapped horses received a trouble-free run. Third Chief, Gold Boots and Mecca Star—the dividend payers—all started from 36 yards. Third Chief had only the breakers and stragglers behind him when the field settled down, but S. M. Miller, taking advantage of the leisurely pace, brought him forward three wide through the straight the first time. At the mile Third Chief was sharing the third line and he was a clear leader six furlongs out.

He had a handy lead as they came to the straight and he did not have to be driven right out to win by six lengths. Third Chief’s time of 4min 30sec for the two* miles was well outside Zenith’s race and course record of 4mln 22sec.

Gold Boots beat Mecca Star by three lengths for second and On Probation was a length and a half away third. Gold Boots followed Third Chief and Bay Prince through the straight the first time, was third equal with Lee Colonel and Le Whip six furlongs out and a clear second behind Third Chief on the home turn.

Mecca Star, one of the tailenders with a mile left to run, made ground quickly to join Calm Autumn and Allakasam in the third line three furlongs out.

On Probation was mid-field on the inner when he struck bother with five furlongs to go. On Probation just beat Allakasam. Then came Hal Special, the early pacemaker. Richard Hanover, which struck bother near the six furlongs, was a close seventh and Gay Return led in the rest. The second fancy, Light. Silk, failed to last the distance. He finished tenth just ahead of My Word, which was involved in the mix-up which cost On Probation his chance. Le Whip, the third favourite to win, was pulled up in the straight when thoroughly beaten. Lee Colonel also failed to finish the course. £66 Double The Marlborough Cup was the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Third Chief, the 5/3 favourite, paid £l3 9s and £3 3s fid for a win and place, and £66 16s fid

for £1 with Frosty Heather, the Breayley Memorial Handicap winner.

The double dividend was shared by the holders of 716 5s tickets, of which 146 were held on the course.

Frosty Heather is Wellingtonowned but is prepared at Yaldhurst by G. B. Noble. He was skilfully handled by the young stable reinsman, R. L. Stewart. Stewart had Mr R. A. McKenzie's Thurber Frost gelding perfectly positioned right from the start. He tracked the pacemaker, Chief Smile, around to the straight, was brought two wide to challenge early in the run home and ran right away to win by four lengths.

Eone Navarre, third equal till tfae home turn and co-leader early in the run home, was a clear second. He beat Unreal, one of the slowest beginners, by two and a half lengths. Unreal finished strongly to nose Charlie Mack out of third in the last stride. Fallax. third on the inner for most of the race, was fifth ahead of Certify, which broke at the start, and the favourite, Chaman, which appeared to have every chance.
