Red Siren Picked To Win Tomorrow
After a close second on Saturday Red Siren will be a popular fancy for the Provincial Handicap, the main race and first leg of the T.A.B. double at Riccarton tomorrow.
Red Siren was having only his fourth start for the season when second to General Gilbert on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting, and might find more improvement with that run than most of his rivals.
For a half-neck defeat by General Gilbert on Saturday Red Siren will meet the Riccarton gelding on 31b better terms tomorrow.
General Gilbert is topweight with Bst 41b, and the only others with more than Bst are Chatsgay and Hushaway. Hushaway is being switched to a middle distance after a second behind Palisade in the Craven Plate, seven furlongs, last Saturday.
Newcomer The runner for the Tomkinson stable in the sprint, the Amuri Handicap, tomorrow is Hushaway’s halfbrother, Shipmate, a newcomer at the meeting. Six furlongs, the distance of the Amuri Handicap, is Shipmate’s best distance, but the Messmate gelding was disappointing in the second of his two starts at Trentham when he had conditions to suit him. On his best form, however, he is one of the brighter prospects. Captain’s Command, Bellarook and Warfare, the next best behind Palisade and Hushaway on Saturday, give southern stables a strong hand
in the Amuri Handicap, which is the second leg of the T.A.B. double. There will be an on-course double on the Malvern Highweight and the Pareora Handicap. Ski, winner of the highweight on Saturday, is a double acceptor on tomorrow’s programme. He is in the highweight and the Provincial Handicap. Programmes for all double acceptors must be settled by 10 a.m. today. Pease, another winner on Saturday, is in the Pareora and Provincial Handicaps. She will be assured of favouritism if she runs against the hacks in the Pareora Handicap. Riding engagements for the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting tomorrow include: W. D. Skelton: Coseta, Early Dawn, Llanston. Gold View, No Smoke. G. F. Hughes: General Gilbert, Paris Match, Stageland, Blue Bavou, Last Dip. E. G. Low: Aiten Fiord, Summer Lad, Omasong, Baloney. A. H.
