Baby Goes To U.K.
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. «. A young Englishman, David Jackson, waved goodbye to his seven-month-old son, Michael, at Auckland Airport yesterday, knowing he will not see him again before October. Michael, wearing a feeder which proclaimed “I’m a genuiie Kiwi,” boarded the aeroplane in the care of Miss Jillian Reeves, the 25-year-old Aucklander who volunteered to look after him during the 36-hour flight to London. Michael, whose mother died in Auckland last October, is being sent to live with his maternal grandparents in Sussex, England. The couple had arrived here in April to settle. Mr Jackson said yesterday he wants to go back to England and start a new life. “I hope to have saved my fare by October,” he said. “It might take a bit longer, depending on how quickly I can earn it.’’ Also saying goodbye were Mr and Mrs C. Devonshire, of New Lynn, who took the baby into their home for the last few months. Mrs Devonshire, in tears at Michael’s departure, said: “He wa s already calling me mum.”
