NO BEAUTY QUEEN
Runner-up Not Interested (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 6. Another “Miss Southland” contest may have to be held to find someone to represent the province in the “Miss New Zealand” beauty quest this year. “Miss Southland,” 19-year-old Miss Rae Kelman, of Invercargill, announced earlier this week that she had abdicated her title in favour of marriage.
The runner-up in this year’s contest, Muss Lesley White, a 21-year-old fashion co-ordinator of Waikaka Valley, later accepted the title. She announced on Saturday that she, too, was not interested in the beauty title because of the personal appearances it would involve.
Miss White said that when she accepted the title,, she was told there would be a wardrobe worth £2OO. She valued it on seeing it at £6O. She estimated it would cost her £l5O out of her own pocket to be suitably dressed for the nine-week New Zealand tour.
