DEFIANT STAND THWARTS O.B.

Unable to press home the advantage of early wickets, High School Old Boys had to be content with first innings points against Lancaster Park. Twice Old Boys were in a position to force an outright win, but aggressive batting by Irving in the first innings and a determined stand by Dowker and D. J. McKendry in the second thwarted their efforts. Irving’s innings was not one for the purist, but it was extremely effective, not only loosening Old Boys’ grip on the game but ensuring that Lancaster Park took bonus points. He hit powerfully and well and with R. F. Cocks, who also showed unexpected ability, scored 41 runs for the last wicket. Runs came quickly In Old Boys’ second innings and Bull was In fine form. His 64 were made in 106 minutes: he drove with fine power and showed the

strength of his on-side play. Barbarel again batted purposefully and for Lancaster Park the alluring flight of D. J. McKendry brought him the rich reward of five for 41. Old Boys declared shortly after tea, 112 minutes being set aside to get Lancaster Park out, and forceful bowling by Hounsell soon made this, in the eyes of the Lancaster Park batsmen, a very long time. Hounsell bowled very well, h|s speed and accuracy worrying all the batsmen, and within 45 minutes Lancaster Park had lost five for 35. However, the sharp edge of the Old Boys’ attack was blunted on the broad bat of Dowker and although a variety of bowlers was tried he and McKendry remained unruffled and together scored 76 runs in even time. Umpires: Messrs R. G. Aitken and L. C. Johnston.
