IMPROVED BATTING
Resistance
For East
The expected win for St. Alban, duly came, but not before the younger players in the East-Shirley senior team for the first time left good impressions. East-Shirley made a faltering start and had lost four for 30 before Home, an out-of-form batsman this year, and Pulley, in his first game, came together. They gradually took charge of the St. Albans spinners and forced Guillen to bring himself on in an effort to break the stand.
This he did only because Harris stood in the way of a powerful smash from Home and caught him. However, Pulley, who used his feet quite well to Burtt, kept placing the ball nicely and picking up the runs, and found a worthy helper in Hearn, who played some healthv drives.
Shewan, who has made useful runs recently, laid around him for 23 but the last four wickets fell for two runs, Poore and Burtt finally gaining some reward after, collectively, 41 fruitless overs. The matter of time did not come into St. Albans quest for 66 runs to win and Burtt and Samson made 54 between them, with some bright batting and speedy running between the wickets; Harris finished things with a huge six over long-off. Umpires: Messrs J. A. Luxford and T. F. Mathie.
