Avonside Team Is Dropping Behind

After beginning the season well and holding a lead for several rounds, last season’s winner, Avonside is dropping behind in the senior women’s tennis competition now that it is without the services of Mrs R. Davy.

On Saturday, at United, Avonside was beaten, 4-2, by Elmwood, and, on Sunday, at Wilding Park, Elmwood had another win—over Edgeware by 53 games to 47. Avonside has still to play its sixth round match with Shirley, for which the teams have made an alternative arrangement. However, a win in this with maximum points would not bring it up to Elmwood’s total now. In the other match on Saturday. Shirley beat Edgeware, 4 matches to 2. The points at the end of the fifth round on Saturday were: Elmwood 59, Avonside 48. Edgeware 33, Shirley 20. Alter yesterday’s match, Elmwood moved to 72 and Edgeware to 36. Made Few Errors Top for Edgeware, Miss S. Field had a varied week-end. She was no match on Saturday for Miss D. Smith when they met for the umpteenth time this season. Miss Smith was in strong driving mood and she made few errors to win, 6-4. 6-2. Then yesterday. Miss Field met the national under 17 champion.

6-2. She was a great deal steadier than she had been the previous day, too steady for Miss Bishop who was unable to take the attack. A meeting between two junior rivals. Miss R. Legge (Elmwood) and Miss R. Dillon (Edgeware), was won easily by Miss Legge, 6-0. 6-2, when she played forcefully throughout. Results: Elmwood v. Edgeware Singles.—Miss J. Bishop lost to Miss S.
