Woolston’s Lead Now 27 Points In Tennis

Woolston moved to a substantial lead again when sectional play in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior men’s competition began at Wilding Park yesterday.

On Saturday at United,' when the last round of the preliminary play finished, Elmwood became the fourth I team in the top section when it beat Cashmere without the loss of a match in the crucial fixture. In the other matches on Saturday. Woolston beat North Linwood, 5 matches to 1, University beat Linwood Avenue, 9 sets to 6, and Edgeware, an improved team, gained its second win of the season when it beat Beckenham, 5 matches to 1. even though J. Mitchell had returned to the Beckenham side. The points after the seventh round were: Woolston 101, University 76, North Linwood 72, Elmwood 68, Cashmere 48, Edgeware 38. i Linwood Avenue 25. Martin (University), each was even in matches but University won by 8 sets to 6. Martin lost to Payne but he gained a set and that helped to give his side success. However, those two teams are now equal on the points table. R. McCutcheon, top for University. had no trouble to beat P Angland. 8-3. 6-0. Angland lobbed well and drove his opponent back a number of times but he did not have the same attacking power. Martin and Payne battled it out for a long time. Martin began with some aggression but It went out cf him later as they began a driving duel. Payne retrieved magnificently and covered the court tenaciously, swinging the ball to the lines.
