A foot fault In the last game cost Richey the first set. but he came back strongly to take the next two sets as Crookenden appeared to tire. The New Zealander held his service only once in the second set.

Arthur Ashe, runner-up in the Australian championships last week, went down in the first round to Frank Froehling. 6-4, 3-6 6-3.
