GRASS FIRES KEEP BRIGADE BUSY
Christchurch firemen had a busy week-end. They attended nine scrub or grass fires. A grass fire on the roadside at Aorangi road was extinguished by units from the Central and St. Albans stations called at 12.14 p.m. on Saturday. The call was the first of five in little more than an hour. Units from the Central and Sockburn stations, called at 12.21 pin, put out a fire in a garage at the home of Norman Alexander Bryant, at 18 Ryeland avenue. A shed and timber were destroyed by fire at the home of Malcolm Donaldson, 22 Wychbury street. The blaze was extinguished by units from the Central and Sydenham stations, called at 12.47 p.m.
Six minutes later, two units from the New Brighton station were called to a grass fire on a vacant section at 162 Rockinghorse road, owned by Royce Overend, of 19 Manhire street.
A grass fire on a vacant section in Palmside street, owned by Nancy Sutherland, of Gwynfa avenue, was put out by units from the Central and Sydenham stations, called at 1.20 p.m. Two units from the New Brighton station, called at 2.3 p.m., extinguished a grass fire on the property of Ivan Dodge, at 72 Cygnet street. A fire in rubbish and tree stumps in the grounds of St. Phillip’s Presbyterian Church, Main North road, Belfast, was put out. by units from the Central and St. Albans stations, called at 3.2 p.m. A grass fire at Erskine Point, Corsair Bay, was put out by two units from the Lyttelton station, called at 3.9 p.m.
At 8.27 p.m. two units from the New Brighton station went to a scrub fire on the foreshore of Marine parade. New Brighton firemen were again called out to a scrub fire on the foreshore of Marine parade, near Beattie street, at 11.56 p.m.
Units from the Central and St. Albans stations and the Waimairi County Council’s fire tender extinguished a scrub fire on the property of Peter Street, 231 Johns road, shortly before .1 p.m. yesterday. A rubbish fire in a disused pit in Hare wood road owned by Farrier-Waimak, Ltd.,, was extinguished by a unit from the St. Albans station, called at 2.18 p.m. At 5.40 p.m. a unit from the St. Albans station was called to a chimney fire at the home of Wayne Blackburn at 105 Langdons road. Two units from the Central station went to a shed fire on the property of Mrs A. Clifford at 312 Montreal street at 7.12 p.m. A unit from the Central station went at 8.29 p.m. to a fire in a car owned by Brenda Hodge, of 51 Burke street, while the vehicle was in Cathedral square outside the United Service Hotel at 8.29 p.m.
