Captain E. G. Meatyard To Command Wahine

“The Press” Speeiol Service WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. ■ Captain E. G. K. Meatyard will command the new interisland express steamer Wahine. His appointment has been announced by the Union Steam Ship Company. Captain Meatyard will leave New Zealand by air for Britain on Friday to stand by the hew vessel till it has been completed and done its sea trials. He will then bring the ship out on its delivery voyage.

Captain Meatyard, who began his career at sea on board the Government training vessel Amakoura when he was 16, was appointed third officer of the Waihora when he joined the Union company in 1924.

He was second officer of the Manuka when it was wrecked at Long Point on December 16. 1929. Other posts included four

years as mate in the Wahine and a period as mate in the hospital ship Maunganui till he took command of the Poolta,

Captain Meatyard was promoted to master in 1943. His first command of a passenger vessel came in 1945 when he took over the Picton ferry Tamahine. In 1951 he was chosen to go to Britain to stand by and deliver to New Zealand the company's new freighter, the Waimate. In the same year Captain Meatyard became a master in I the inter-island express service when he took over the Rangatira. He has remained there ever since, serving in the Hinemoa and Maori, apart from a brief period as relieving master of the Monowai.

Captain Meatyard is due to retire at the end of this year.
