HILLDALE MAY WIN MATAMATA CUP

“The Press” Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH.

Hilldale, with its free galloping, and the goodl stayer, Honourable, seem very likely to dispute the finish of the Matamaui Cup today. Hilldale regained winning form at Ellerslie last Monday.

Honourable has not done as well lately but she looks ready to improve. With No 2 barrier position Hilldale is favourably placed to go for another end-to-end win.

When he won the W. S. Spence Handicap, a mile and a quarter, on Monday, he went to the front after three furlongs and stayed there. Hilldale has a bit further to go in the Matamata Cup and the run home is pretty testing but it might take a very good finisher to overtake him. He has tackled only the one middle distance this season.

Kay Filou is another laststart winner among the acceptors and Greymoon, Piakonui, El Khebira and Ocean Mist have sufficient ability to go well.

Arbelle, a five-year-old mare formerly trained at Trentham, has taken a new lease of life since coming north to Matamata, and she promises to continue her good form in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Publicans’ Handicap. The most notable of her opponents are Admiral Donnington, a three-year-old of some quality, and Bright Idea. From her last three starts Arbelle secured two firsts and a fourth.

Unless there is an unexpected change in the weather the going will be excellent.
