Reciprocity Sought
Federated Farmers wants the National Airways Corporation to buy the British Aircraft Corporation’s 1-11, according to a Press Association message from Wellington.
In a statement yesterday, the Dominion president of Federated Farmers (Mr E. W. McCallum) said representations had been made to the Government on its behalf on the subject. Mr McCallum said the question of the right of entry to the United Kingdom market which took such a high proportion of New Zealand's primary produce was becoming of increasing importance to New Zealand. “Shortly both countries will be commencing negotia-
tions to revise the trade arrangements which expire in 1967,” he sail. “Implicit in any negotiations is the question of reciprocity of trade. “In this regard the New Zealand primary producers are concerned that British industry should be given the greatest possible opportunity to trade in the New Zealand market in the same way as New Zealand primary exporters are seeking expanding opportunities in the United Kingdom market.”
Mr McCallum said the federation had asked the Government to give serious thought to recommending that the replacement aircraft for the National Airways Corporation be British. “In making this recommendation, Federated Farmers is conscious that it is not competent to judge the technical quality of competing aircraft, but, other factors being equal or about equal, New Zealand primary producers would favour the purchase of British aircraft,” he said.
