PLANES OR BUTTER? N.Z. In Dilemma With Britain
Federated Farmers wants the National Airways Corporation to buy the B.A.C. 1-11 because of the importance of the right of entry of New Zealand primary produce to the United Kingdom market.
The American Trade Association of New Zealand says price and operating economy alone should be the deciding factors in purchase of a replacement plane.
The British Deputy High Commissioner (Mr B. G. Smallman) says Britain is making a “hard sell” in New Zealand but that purchase or not of the B.A.C. 1-11 has no bearing on New Zealand’s bargaining position over butter.
A huge British food distributing firm warns that politics may become more involved in imports of butter from the Commonwealth.
