Appeal By Red Cross
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 4. The New Zealand Red Cross Society has opened a nationwide appeal for cash donations to relieve the distressed in the two areas. The appeal opened today with an initial grant at £lOOO from the Red Cross Society’s disaster relief fund. Money, rather than food and clothing, should be sent to help the hurricane-devasta-ted islands, a doctor told the Wellington branch of the British Medical Association tonight Relief sent to Niue after two hurricanes some years ago had shown that the best form of relief was not food and clothing, but money. Clothing the islanders hardly needed at any time, and they did not have the facilities for preparing the kinds of food that New Zealand produced.
Mrs R. I. Brake, president of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society, said the headquarters at 33 Cashel street was ready to receive donations or they could be sent to the centre at P.O. Box 217, Christchurch.
