Interested In Wider Bridge

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright)

TOKYO, Feb. 4.

Several leading Japanese heavy machinery manufacturers are preparing to bid for a contract to broaden the Auckland bridge in Auckland, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., said today.

Mitsubishi, one of the Japanese firms, said an international tender for the project worth about £3,928,576 would be called on March 31 this year. The planned project will double the present 14.6 metre width of the 1000-metre crossbay bridge as part of the Government’s expansion programme for ports and harbours. Mitsubishi said four Japanese firms—Hitachi Shipbuild-

tog and Engineering, Yokogawa Bridge, and Ishikawa-jima-Harima Heavy Industries as well as Mitsubishi—had already qualified as competent bidders for the tend-

er. They would all co-operate with local contractors in New Zealand. Mitsubishi said discussions were continuing to determine whether they should take part to the tender separately or as a single group. It also said the Japanese firms would be competing with British and Australian bidders to the tender for the contract.
