FIRE IN WHEAT

60 Acres Lost

A fire which started from the exhaust of a truck swept through a 100-acre paddock of wheat on the farm of Mr H. S. Richards, of Valetta, destroying 60 acres of wheat, valued at £3lOO.

Although the fire started about 3 pun., the Ashburton County Fire Brigade was not summoned until 4.45 p.m. By the time the brigade arrived, the fire had a good hold and more than 60 acres of wheat, which was reedy for harvest, was destroyed. However, the brigade soon had the fire under control by spraying water around the fringes of tbe fire and the spread was halted.

One unit from the Ashburton County Fire Brigade and one unit from the Mayfield Fire Brigade attended.
