“The Press” In 1866
February 6 THE CIRCUS.—Mr. Stevens and his troupe opened their circus last evening, in a large marquee erected in the paddock opposite the Criterion hotel. The tent is a most commodious one, measuring in diameter seventy feet, and full scope is therefore given for the performance of the different acrobatic and trapezian feats, many of which are of a very perilous character. The performance was a most successful one, the building being completely crammed in all parts. To-night will be the last that the company will appear in Christchurch, as arrangements have been made by them for performing at Kaiapoi and Rangiora; a change of programme is
announced, and amongst other feats the eldest boy will proceed on the “Globe
Roulant,” from the ground to the top of the tent, a height of thirty-five feet. OKAIN’S BAY.—A meeting of the ratepayers of Okain’s Bay was held on the evening of Wednesday last in the school-room, to consider the legal position of the present Road Board, and to enquire into the expenditure of the past year .. . After much discussion the following resolutions were passed:— “That the ratepayers of Okain’s Bay are determined not to pay their rates until a legally constituted Road Board be appointed, and a balance sheet of the part year’s expenditure be drawn up and published.” “That a letter be forwarded to the Secretary for Public Works requesting him to look into the matter.” The meeting which was conducted in a very orderly manner, then broke up.
