WEATHER IN JANUARY
Less Sun, Rain,
And Wind
There was less sunshine, rain, and wind in January, although temperaitures were slightly higher, according to a summary of weather prepared by the Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport. Conditions, it says, were rather cloudy during the first and third weeks of the month, with practically the entire month’s rainfall occuring during these periods. The second and fourth weeks were sunny and warm.
Day temperatures reached 80 degrees or more on five occasions, and the maximum of 93 degrees on January 1 was the highest since January 7, 1963. The 93-degree temperature was recorded at the airport. The maximum that day at the Botanic Gardens was 89 degrees. An electrical storm passed over Christchurch during the afternoon of January 23 to give half an inch of rain. There were 10 days of rain in the month. The number of hours of bright sunshine in January totalled 183. The average for the month is 218 hours.
