RECORD TO WELSH
Fast Time In Steeplechase
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN.
Carried along by an exhilarating early pace. R. P. Welsh (Otago) broke the New Zealand record for the 3000 metres steeplechase at Dunedin last night. Welsh went to the front before three laps had been completed, and finished with a time of Bmin 41.3 sec, which cut half a second from the national record held by T. Vincent (Australia).
The time was easily the best made by a New Zealander. Previously E. C. O'Keefe had run Bmin 50sec in Australia after the Perth Commonwealth Games.
It was also the second fastest time by a Commonwealth athlete since 1964.
Results of invitation events were:—
