AUCKLAND, Feb. 3.
Women shop employees nearly lost their lives in a Lynnmall store today because they did not take immediate notice of the fire alarm.
By seconds they missed being trapped in a blaze which destroyed about a third of the second floor of the store of the Farmers' Trading Company, Ltd., in the centre at New Lynn. The fire started about 8.10 a.m., before the shop opened. It was under control 45 minutes later. “We heard the alarm all right,” said Mrs Flo Maxwell, the cook. She was in the lunch-room with Miss Danes Kirk, aged 17, the store display writer. “But we hear the alarm so often that we just made a joke of it. “Then we looked out the lunch-room door, and saw the fire. It was just a sheet of flames.”
The storage area, staff facilities and cafeteria amounting to about 5000 square feet was gutted. The loss of stock has been estimated about £20,000.
