CRIME IN U.K.

Govt. Defeats Censure

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

LONDON, February 3. A Conservative motion criticising the Labour Govern--1 tent’s action dealing with a •mounting wave of crime” in Britain was defeated in the Commons last night by 23 votes.

The vote was 301 to 278. The small Liberal Party voted with the Government and some Conservative members were absent. The Government’s working majority in Commons is four votes. The debate was the first major test for Labour’s new Home Secretary, Mr Roy Jenkins.

He promised a police reorganisation to step up the fight on crime and said that he would bring in outside experts to help.
