Foot And Mouth Disease Precautions
Intensified precautions against the entry of foot and mouth disease into New Zealand would become effective from March 1,. but it was realised that the facilities required to be provided by harbour boards could not be given by that date. Dr. S. Jamieson, director of the Animal Health Division of the Department of Agriculture advised the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. Harbour boards had to provide incineration facilities for all garbage from overseas ships, steam-cleaning facilities for all vehicles imported, and accommodation for officers of the Port Agriculture Service.
The engineer-in-chief (Mr J. A. Cashin) said all the basic information required for the incinerator was on hand, and a report would be made shortly. Mr J. Brand asked for a report for the next meeting. “We would all feel terrible if anything happened through lack of action,” he said. Other harbour boards had
been happy about putting in the facilities, but the local authorities objected on the ground of nuisance and smell, Mr A. J. Sowden, the
secretary-manager, said. He thought the department would cover this. “The utmost urgency” should be given to the provision of facilities, Mr A. A. Macfariane said. Mr Cashin undertook to make a report to the next meeting, but said it would not be a final report.
