NEW WHARF CHARGES
Coast Trade Not Covered
If coastal shipping companies were to adoot the new wharf-handling charges approved by the New Zealand European Shipping Association it would be crippling to the Chatham Islands trade in sheep, Mr B. G. Barclay said at the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. He also asked why there should be such a “terrific” increase in the charge for livestock and said it was about 400 per cent. New Zealand was building up a steady export market for stud stock and the heavy increase seemed to be an imposition. Coastal vessels were not affected by the new charges, and he did not think there was any possibility of the coastal companies adopting them, Mr Sowden said. He did not know the reason for the new charges for livestock. “We don’t want to find ourselves in the position that the coastal people have adopted the same rates,” said Mr J. Brand. “We should advise them that if they contemplate it we would object strongly.” Mr L. G. Amos, the chairman: We would be crying before we were hurt.
No Advertising The Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday rejected a request from a rental car firm to put an advertising sign on the steam-express wharf. Several members said the wharf and the new terminal building should be kept free from advertising.
