Mr Kirk Stranded At Chathams

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, February 2.

Because the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) is still stranded by bad weather in the Chatham Islands, this year’s first Labour caucus, which was to have been held tomorrow and Friday, has been postponed until next week.

A Sunderland flying-boat left Evans Bay, Wellington, early this morning for the Chatham, Islands but was unable to land because of bad weather. Mr Kirk arrived in the Chatham Islands last Friday to meet constituents.

The Opposition leader’s private secretary, Mr P. O. S. Skoglund, said today reports from the Meteorological Office in Wellington indicated bad weather would prevent Mr Kirk being picked up by flying-boat tomorrow. Originally, Mr Kirk was to have returned to Wellington yesterday, but the Sunderland was unable to leave Evans Bay yesterday morning because of rain and mist. Mr Kirk was to have met the leader of the Australian Opposition (Mr Calwell) on his arrival from Sydney in the liner Orcades yesterday afternoon. Mr Calwell —who is accompanied by three Australian Labour parliamentarians—was to have addressed the Labour caucus tomorrow. “But in view of the circumstances alternative arrangements have been made for Mr Calwell to have talks with the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt),” Mr Skoglund said.

Mr Calwell and his party are in New Zealand for four days. Mr Skoglund said that if Mr Kirk was able to return to Wellington tomorrow arrangements would be made for both Opposition leaders to meet.

Next week Mr Kirk will go to Auckland to discuss the selection of General Election candidates with Labour Party officials.

Among those being considered will be Dr. H. C. Tremewan, who is reported to be interested in a suburban district.

Dr. Tremewan resigned from the War Pensions Board after spending six years as" its medical member in Wellington. He will take up a position of Deputy Medical Officer of Health in Auckland in March.
