Canterbury Has Cup Challenge
Regardless of whether Southland staves off Otago's challenge at Invercargill on Saturday, the Canterbury men’s softball team is likely to challenge for the Jeffries Cup, the premier South Island trophy, this season.
On form shown in the national inter-provincial tournament Southland is likely to lose the cup to Dunedin. Otago is currently rated the fourth strongest province in New Zealand and has a very young team that is likely to make even stronger challenges in the next two or three years. However, should Southland —rated eighth in the coun-
try—retain its prize, then Canterbury will put forward its challenge at Invercargill on March 12.
Should Otago beat Southland, it may grant Canterbury a challenge When the teams meet in Christchurch on March 26.
Under Jeffries’ Cup rules the holder has the right to nominate the date and the venue for the challenge. However, which ever province Canterbury challenges it will have to improve on its mediocre tournament form, when it finished eleventh of 13 provincial and two service teams, to win the trophy.
