Another Fast Time By Pursuit Team
Another creditable time by the senior pursuit team was a happy augury for the national championships, and a highlight of last evening’s track cycling meeting at English Park.
Showing one change from the team that beat five minutes a fortnight ago—J. Danielson in place of J. Cleary—it was timed at smin 4sec. This was a meritorious effort in the conditions as the riders had to contend with a blustery nor’wester for half the distance. The conditions also gave additional merit to a flying quarter-mile by T. Weir. His time of 26sec was -4sec slower than Cleary’s. outstanding ride of two week’s ago, but Weir’s ride was in more difficult conditions. Favourites Beaten A feature of one of the late amateur events, the A grade “Devil take the Hindmost,” was the early eliminations of the favoured riders. T. Tabak was the first to go and he was quickly followed by a Timaru rider, A. Hood, Weir, R. Mann and A. Leppens. However, as Tabak and Hood met shortly afterwards in an individual pursuit, they may not have been putting in their most strenuous efforts. There was a slight mishap in one of the amateur events when B. Whitfield had a spill in a heat of the open half mile. However, he escaped with only a skinned shoulder.
