EIGHT-MILE SWIM

Shearers’ Feat In Waiau

Two young shearers working at the Glenhope station in the Lewis Pass swam 8 miles and a half down the turbulent Waiau river yesterday to the junction of the Hope and Waiau rivers. The swim took them 4 hours and a half.

Mr Michael Rooney, aged 23, of Sydney, said that as no sheep were being shorn at the time it was suggested that the boys ride to the No. 1 hut, near the Retreat, about 8] miles north-west of the station and swim back down the Waiau. “Four of us rode our horses up there. Carl Nurse, aged 16, a pupil of Lincoln High School, and I did the swim. The other two fellows brought the horses back to the station and checked on our progress from time to time,” he said. “When we climbed down the cliff face to the river we thought we might have bitten off more than we could chew. But, as we could not get back, we decided to give it a go.” Mr Rooney said the river was flowing about 10 to 15 miles an hour- and was very cold. “We escaped with only a few bruises,” he said.
